BDO Refunded ₱75K—Pay ₱400K or ₱475K?

  • Repayment
  • Interest / fees
  • Complaint / dispute

A BDO cardholder says a refund of ₱75,000 for a cancelled purchase posted on October 4, five days before the payment due date. With a ₱475,000 statement balance, the cardholder says they paid ₱400,000 after deducting that refund. Then came an argument: could the remaining ₱75,000 still generate finance charges?

The dates matter: purchase on August 28, statement cut-off around September 14–15, refund posted on October 4 and payment due October 9. According to the cardholder, the credit was already visible in the app. The Reddit thread does not provide the next billing statement, the applied-payment ledger, or a written BDO decision on this specific account.

The five views below are paraphrased from separate Reddit accounts, not comments posted by BorrowTalk members.

Redditor A:

Has handled similar refunds before and believes the posted credit should reduce what needs to be paid, without interest.

Redditor B:

Thinks BDO usually treats a refund as a credit against the balance, but would still ask customer service and keep a case reference number.

Redditor C:

Raises a distinction: a refund may be treated differently for the minimum amount due, although the full balance after refund may be a separate calculation.

Redditor D:

Would pay the original statement amount to avoid risking finance charges until BDO confirms how that particular refund was applied.

Redditor E:

Takes the stricter position that the ₱475K statement should still have been settled and the ₱75K credit might count as an overpayment for the next period.

The disagreement centers on whether a merchant refund credited after statement cut-off can offset the amount needed to avoid finance charges. BDO publishes general information on card terms and Minimum Amount Due, but its Minimum Amount Due formula is a different question from whether this refund reduced the full billed balance. Neither source answers how this particular account was processed.

The missing evidence is the next statement or a bank-issued explanation confirming how the ₱75,000 credit was applied and whether finance charges appeared. Until then, neither side of the Reddit argument has a verified outcome. Would you rely on the amount shown in the app, or seek written confirmation before the payment deadline?

Bank references: BDO credit-card terms and Minimum Amount Due explanation (general information; not an account-specific decision).
